'Red Chairs' Threadpainting by Ann Abutrab

Welcome to my website. My name is Ann Abutrab; I live in Upper LaHave, Nova Scotia.

Sewing, creative surface embellishment and playing with fibre have been a part of my life ever since I can remember. In thread painting, I use fabric and thread as my medium instead of paper and paint, and a sewing machine instead of a brush. Inspiration for my work is from the spectacular landscapes that surround me.

I begin with a photograph which I transfer to fabric using paint, dyes or inks. Then I hoop the design, drop the feeddogs and freemotion machine embroider with a palette of colors, varying the speed and rotating the hoop. I also incorporate hand embroidery on painted silk or cotton.

This is an evolving art for me, although this technique dates back a century, when Singer machines were used to embroider motifs.
