Barry Stevens is a North American Mi'kmaq native, living on traditional territory in Nova Scotia, who uses Mother Earth
and ancient Mi'kmaq legends as inspiration for creating his stone petroglyphs.
Barry's Mi'kmaq forefathers left a legacy of petroglyphs in Nova Scotia in McGowan Lake, the Bedford Barrens, and
Kejimkujik National Park. As a small boy, Barry started hand carving his own petroglyphs, and still collects his stones during travels in the woods, fishing, and ocean beach combing. His
art, which varies from small pieces to stones three feet in diameter, is displayed at the internationally-renowned Houston North Gallery (Lunenburg), and is also being enjoyed by
collectors throughout North America and Europe.
Through the exploration of his art, Barry began to understand the complexity of the morals and life lessons told through
the Mi'kmaq legends. He feels pleased and fortunate that he is able to share the messages of these legends, as pertinent today as it was thousands of years ago, through his petroglyphs.
