For many years as a teacher I delighted in watching my students create art and develop their confidence in drawing
and painting. My students ranged from primary grade to undergraduate university students.
After a time I decided to retire early so I could have way more fun doing it myself. I returned home to Nova Scotia in 1995 and have been spending my time painting, making prints and cards and teaching art workshops.

I favor realism in my work and I love to work out the intricate details in the subject matter I am painting. I do
paint outdoors sometimes but am more often found in my studio using photo reference material. I also enjoy drawing a great deal and like to do pen and ink drawings ending with a loose
watercolor wash.
I was intrigued by watercolor in particular because it was so interactive and it usually didn't do what I wanted it to. After many battles I have worked out a comfortable relationship with it and can now keep it under control and retain bright colors in my paintings.
My favorite things to paint are coastal cove
scenes with fishing boats and resident sea gulls as well as city scenes from Halifax. Actually I like to paint just about anything so flowers and still lifes are often selected as subject matter too.

I am doing more commissioned work for clients now and that means I often am painting more unusual subject matter
(such as an antique fire engine and a cruise liner or someone's home) but this forces me to branch out in different and interesting directions and sometimes I switch back into oils or acrylics if the pieces are larger.
